Shooting in a Beat em up


The latest update added various things in terms of gameplay, including a shooting enemy as well as giving the player the ability to shoot.


These kinds of feature (ranged attacks) aren't often seen in this genre that mainly revolves around melee combat. I decided to add them in anyway  in order mix up the usual flow of the game. With these it creates a larger distance between the "danger" and the "actual enemy" as well as the "attack" and "the player" which players players have come to expect. This means that the player will need to pay more attention to their surroundings but are also given more options to deal with the oncoming threats.

While these are a nice change of pace, they still need to be balanced around the beat em up genre. Too many enemy shooters will lead to the game turning into a bullet hell, and allowing the player to shoot too much will make the game way too easy. So I've placed certain limits to the both of them. For the enemies, there can only be one shooting enemy at a time and they cannot move from their position. This is so that players will be able to see where the threat will cover and make their decisions accordingly. On the player side, players will only have a maximum of three shots before needing to pick up one of the randomly spawning ammo crates. Alongside that there will be physical obstacles that will limit movement and prevent bullets from going through. With this, players will need to spend their limited shots wisely in order to maximize the effectiveness of each attack.

That's all for this update, I hope that these new features are able to add a fresh yet fair new experience to the game.
