Levels! Bosses! Let's Discuss
Over the past couple of updates, I've added a new form of progression to the game in the form of levels and bosses. Why I did this was because gameplay had gotten stale and repetitive with the player endlessly fighting through the same enemies until death, which even gets easier once the player becomes familiar with the enemies and thus making the repetitive gameplay last even longer, so I decided to shake up the cycle with additional challenges, namely the bosses.
First lets talk about this bad boy, whom I shall now call Copmbie. He's the first boss the player will face once enough enemies have been defeated. He has a moderate health pool and two different attacks, a three projectile barrage and a forward charge. His main movements are limited to the far side of the level (with the exception of the charge attack) making his position easier for the player to keep track of. While he is somewhat simple to fight, a player who isn't carefully will find themselves quickly taken down by his attacks. Overall I believe this is a decently balanced challenge for the player to progress past the first stage.
Next we'll discuss the second level of the game, The Forest, where the player will now be beating up wild wolves and infected plants. These new enemies have different movement patterns, mixing up the player's gameplay from the previous level. Though this means the standard moving enemies don't walk off screen and disappear, to prevent performance issues the enemies of this level don't continuously spawn but will instead respawn when one is killed. In addition, the ranged enemies of this level have vertical movement making them a little harder to fight. Hopefully, this second level with its new cast of enemies will alleviate the repetitiveness of playing through the game.
Once the player has defeated enough enemies in the second level, they'll come face to face with this beast, the Alpha Wolf. This boss of the second level has a higher health pool but only has one simple ranged attack. Instead of having many attacks, while it's on the field it will continuously spawn waves of normal wolves that the player will have to fight or navigate through to start damaging the boss. This should be a harder fight when compared to the first boss, with the player having to constantly avoid getting hit by the wolves and the occasional projectile, this fight will keep them on their toes to survive.
As of now, after beating the second boss, the game will loop back to the first level. In future updates, I hope to have enough levels for the game to cycle through or randomly select as the player keeps playing, to keep this "endless" game fun for as long as it can.
And thats all for this update, may you find these additions a decent challenge to the game
